Marvin Dale Shumway, 92. passed away Thursday, November 16, 2017 at Eunice Smith Nursing Home in Alton.

Born in Palmyra, IL on August 7, 1925, he was the son of Roscoe and Lula ((Ballard) Shumway.
A World War II Navy veteran, he had been assigned to the LST488, participating in seven invasions: New Georgia, Cape Torokina, Guam, Saipan, Lyte Gulf, Lingayen Gulf and Luzon Philippines. Marvin was a member of the United States LST Association, Illinois LST Association and USS Ship Memorial, Inc.. He was a life member of the Alton VFW Post 1308; and an enthusiastic fan of auto racing.

On April 20, 1951 at the Wood River Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Manley Mace, he was united in marriage to Louise Howell. She survives.

Surviving also are a daughter, Cynthia (Jeffrey) Connor of Springfield, Mass.,;grandchildren, Jennifer (Jeffrey) Conlon of Duxbury, Mass., Nicholas (Alessandra) Connor of Westfield, Mass; great grandchildren, Kaley Conlon, Jackson Conlon, Reid Connor and Wyatt Connor; a very, special "honorary daughter", Martha Arnold; sisters, Patty Stewart, Sandy Shumway; brother, Jim Shumway; and several nieces and nephews.

His parents; sisters, Fayne Jenkins and Virginia Tisdale; and a brother, William "Skip" Shumway preceded in death.

A private Celebration of Life and Burial at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery will be conducted at a later date with full military honors.

At his request, memorials may be made to the Lovejoy United Presbyterian Church, 2550 Rock Hill Rd, Wood River, IL 62095, where he had been an active member orto the Land of Lincoln Honor Flight Program, 57 Country Place, Springfield, IL 62703.
