Louise Shumway, 88, died Friday, December 20, 2018.
Born in Harlingen, TX on April 27, 1930, the daughter of the late Louisa (Hudson) Howell of Wood River and late Leslie Howell of Hartford. The first ten years of her life, she enjoyed life on her parents citrus farm with her two sisters.
On April 20, 1951, she was united in marriage to Marvin Dale Shumway at Wood River Presbyterian Church by Rev. Manley Mace. He died November 16, 2017.
She worked at Olin as a secretary in the Foreign Engineering Department, was a clerk/buyer at Hartmann's Jewelry and Gift Shop, and retired from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville in Audio Visual Services after 17 years. She was a graduate of East Alton-Wood River High school with the Class of 1948, where she had the honor of serving as President of the National Honor Society and was a member of the Big Sisters. In 1956, she was crowned Sweetheart Queen of the Gamma Upsilon Chapter of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority.
She and her husband enjoyed traveling within the Unites States and abroad.
She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia, and her husband, Jeffrey Connor; granddaughter, Jennifer, and her husband, Jeffrey Conlon; grandson, Nicholas Connor and his wife, Alessandra; great grandchildren, Kaley and Jackson Conlon, Reid and Wyatt Connor; as well as two "special daughters", Martha Arnold and Tammy Iskarous; sister, LaMora Sullivan; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Her parents; husband; a sister, Helen Welsh, and two brothers-in-law, Wayne Sullivan and Jim Welsh preceded her in death.
At the request of Louise, a private service will be held.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for the LoveJoy United Presbyterian Church, 2550 Rock Hill Road, Wood River, IL 62095, where she was an active member or Riverbend Family Ministries, 131 E. Ferguson Av, Wood River, IL 62095.
