Joseph McCarthy, Jr., 87, passed away 7:15 pm, Wednesday, March 10, 2021 at The Villas at Holly Brook in Bethalto.

Born April 17, 1932 in Hettick, IL, he was the son of Joseph and Emma (Bilbruck) McCarthy.

A U.S. Navy veteran, he earned the rank of Sr. Chief Petty Officer during his 26 year career. He served as an Aviation Anti-submarine Warfare Technician and was recognized as one of the youngest personnel to achieve the rank of Petty Officer and an avid leader.  After retiring, he attended SIU-E, where in 1981, he earned a Bachelor Degree in Liberal Arts.

He married Dena Young who preceded him in death in 1995, then married Anna Budde in December of 2006.  She died November 24, 2020.

Surviving are a daughter, Rebecca (John) Wayne of Edwardsville; step-grandson, Trey Wayne; brothers, Thomas McCarthy of South Jacksonville, IL, John McCarthy of Lakeland, FL; sister, Mary Schwab of Carlinville; several beloved nieces, nephews and extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wives; daughter, Elizabeth McCarthy in infancy; and brother, Charles McCarthy.

A Memorial Visitation will be held from 3-5 pm, Thursday, March 18 at Marks Mortuary in Wood River.

Private burial will be in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.
