Darrell Lee Ottwell, 73, passed away 11:29 am, Sunday, December 2, 2018 at Alton Memorial Hospital.
He was born March 18, 1939 in Hartford, the only son of Hershel and Corine (Gourley) Ottwell.
Darrell was a 1957 graduate of East Alton-Wood River High School and continued to be an avid supporter of "Oiler" athletics. He attended Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and served in the US Army, where he played baseball for both. He worked at Shell Refinery in Wood River for 38 years and 10 years at Phillips for the CORE project.
Darrell was a member of the East Alton American Legion Post 794, Wood River-Hartford District 15 School Board, Wood River Parks and Recreation Board, Wood River Refinery Museum Board as well as the Shell Recreation Association President. He proudly coached the East Alton Jr./Sr. Legion and Amerigas baseball teams for many years.
On March 29, 1975 at the Grace Lutheran Church in St. Louis, he married Pamela Sue Wilhite. She survives.
Surviving also are his mother-in-law, Lila Wilhite; children, Matt (Lisa) Sabatino, Mark (Joli) Sabatino, Meaghan (Chris) Wilson; grandchildren, of which he was most proud, Michael Sabatino (girlfriend, Lindsey Lombardo), Emilee Sabatino, Alec Sabatino, Alyssa Kindle, Zaide and Zenn Wilson; and his fur baby, "Cade".
His parents and father-in-law, Carl Wilhite, preceded in death.
Visitation will be from 3-8 pm, Thursday, December 6, at Marks Mortuary in Wood River, where services will be conducted at 10 am Friday. Elders of the East Maple St Chapel, where he had been a life long member, will officiate.
Burial will follow in Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey.
